Accessible Event Planning in Club Culture

Club culture is a space for music, art, encounters, and collective experiences. At the same time, barriers arise in many event settings—for example, through spatial structures, sensory stimuli, unclear communication, or normative expectations of endurance, pace, and presence.

In this workshop, we will address the question of how events in club culture can be made more accessible. The starting point is a power-critical perspective on ableism and structural exclusion in nightlife. Together, we will look at key aspects of accessible event planning, including communication and information policy, sensory stimuli, spatial design, access requirements, and strategies such as relaxed settings or access friends.

ACCESSIBILITY

Event:

The workshop will be held as a relaxed workshop. This means that different forms of attention and participation are welcome. You can move around, lie down, bring and use stimulation toys, or leave the room at any time and come back. Various seating options are available (e.g., beanbags, chairs, and reclining options).

Fitzroy, Holzmarktstraße 15–18, 10179 Berlin

(near the Jannowitzbrücke U-Bahn/S-Bahn station)

Getting there & accessibility

  • The nearest U-Bahn and S-Bahn station is Jannowitzbrücke. There are elevators to the platforms.
  • Due to construction work on Holzmarktstraße, the regular sidewalk is currently unusable. Instead, the footpath runs along a separated section of the road, separated from the bike lane.
  • This alternative route is relatively narrow but level. At the point where the path rejoins the curb, there is a curb ramp with a noticeable slope (approx. 2 inches), which may be problematic for wheelchair users.
  • An alternative route leads across the opposite side of the street (Holzmarktstraße out of town), where the regular sidewalk is wider. You can then cross back to the other side of the street at a traffic light.
  • Access to the area where the Fitzroy is located is between the BVG building and a gas station. From there, you can reach the club via a path.
  • Alternatively, you can also reach the club from the Michaelbrücke side. However, this route is very steep (estimated gradient of approx. 35%) and therefore not suitable for all mobility aids or energy levels.
  • There is a curb ramp in front of the Fitzroy.
  • The Fitzroy itself has two entrances, one of which is barrier-free, at ground level, and accessible with a wide door.

Interior

  • The entire event area is level and free of steps.
  • The floor is smooth, with no trip hazards.
  • There is a barrier-free toilet with a wide entrance, grab rails, and plenty of space.
  • Seating and reclining options are available (e.g., chairs, cushions, mats if necessary).
  • Snacks, drinks, blankets, and stimulation toys are provided.
