12th Roundtable: Right-wing extremism and club culture
The publication of Correctiv's investigation in January made it abundantly clear once again how real right-wing extremism is in the midst of our society and how urgent it is for civil society to address this reality continuously and consistently. We are also seeing right-wing extremism becoming more prevalent in club culture. Club culture spaces are particularly significant in this context, as they are important places for collective encounters, social cohesion, free expression, and diversity. This makes it all the more concerning when right-wing or far-right tendencies find their way into club culture spaces. In particular, the potential and actual effects on the well-being and safety of marginalized visitors are a cause for great concern and undermine the cultural integrity and inclusivity of our spaces. We invite you to examine and analyze this current social situation and to discuss concrete strategies and measures for actively countering right-wing extremism in club culture.

Right-wing extremist ideologies in club culture not only threaten human rights and the values of inclusion and diversity, but also create fear and insecurity that spoil the club experience and club culture environment for many. Right-wing extremism in club culture can manifest itself in various and often ambiguous forms, whether through right-wing extremist events in cultural spaces, right-wing structures at club doors, bookings of artists from the right-wing extremist spectrum, or right-wing symbolism at events. The current "new complexity" of the right-wing extremist scene is increasingly exacerbating uncertainties and making it difficult to take concrete and consistent action. There is often a lack of knowledge, awareness, and clear processes for dealing appropriately with right-wing extremist developments, incidents, and reports.
Precisely because clubs and club culture events can foster community and belonging, it is all the more important that we actively protect these places, work to make them as safe as possible, and be willing to reflect and learn together.
While it is a dystopian, unacceptable reality that right-wing extremism is on the rise in all areas of society, the problem remains complex and requires thorough analysis and concrete strategies for action. That is why we would like to address this issue in depth at this roundtable. After thematic inputs on various aspects of right-wing extremism in club culture, including an introduction to right-wing extremism in the present day, the identification of right-wing extremist symbols in clubs, and strategies for dealing with right-wing extremism and right-wing violence, we would like to ask ourselves the following questions:
→ How do we deal with right-wing programs, symbols, and behavior of clubs and collectives?
→ What preventive measures can we take as clubs and collectives?
→ How can we reflect on structures, support each other, and learn together?
→ What values should be enshrined in a common code of values for club culture in order to counteract right-wing extremist ideologies?
→ What strategies can be used in public relations and communication to raise awareness of right-wing extremism in club culture and support measures to combat it?
