Awareness as a cross-cutting priority within the Club Commission
Club culture thrives on the diversity of the communities that come together within it. In all its projects, the Club Commission is therefore committed to eliminating discrimination and critically examining existing structures. The network, insights, and experiences gained through the work of the Awareness Academy play a central role in this effort.
United We Stream, the solidarity-driven response to COVID-19 and the global shutdown of club culture, was launched in the spring of 2020 by the Clubcommission and its partners. The Awareness working group within the organization also drew on knowledge and experience from the Awareness Academy. Together, they developed a manifesto for the globally successful platform that prioritizes diversity in booking and awareness initiatives.
Club Culture Day on October 3, 2020, sent a strong signal of vitality in times when the very existence of the scene was under threat. As part of this project, forty clubs and collectives were honored for their years—and in some cases decades—of dedication to Berlin’s club culture. Not only did the jury’s composition reflect the diverse perspectives of the club scene, but the evaluation criteria also explicitly emphasized the importance of diversity and awareness efforts.
